Substance use evaluations are also known as drug and alcohol evaluations, though any form of problematic behavior can also be the focus of this type of assessment. These evaluations are done between an individual and an addictions counselor, or a CADC. One goal of these evaluations is to determine whether an individual’s alcohol and/ordrug use (or other behavior like gambling or video game use) poses a problem in their life and to find out what their motivations might be to change. Often these types of evaluations are conducted by counselors using a motivational interviewing approach.
