Experience
I have been practicing in Portland since 1985. I was on the primary faculty at OHSU in the Department of Medical Psychology from 1985 to 1997, first as an assistant professor and then as an associate professor. In that capacity, I headed the Child Outpatient Clinic, supervising interns and residents. I served for four years as Director of Psychological Services at Cedar Hills Hospital (a small private hospital with children and adolescent units, now closed). I started a part-time private practice in 1987 and switched to full-time private practice in 1997.
Current Practice
Assessment: I assess students (elementary, high school, college or graduate school) with issues that have impact on their school performance. I conduct comprehensive assessments when needed, to figure out what is going on and what to do when a student has trouble in school. I work with students from private and public schools, college, and occasionally post-graduate students. I assess learning problems and emotional and behavioral adjustment.
Follow-up/treatment: After I complete an assessment, I provide detailed recommendations to parents and students to motivate and to initiate change. I make recommendations to schools, and refer to other treatment providers, tutors/coaches, and programs when I can. I often provide follow-up or treatment myself (coaching and consultation to improve self-regulation, help with parenting, help with homework and study process, and more traditional treatment for psychological issues). I often prepare documents to get students qualified for extended time on the SAT or GRE examinations.
