About Diagnoses

At Behavioral Neuropsychology, we understand the powers and the limitations of current diagnostic systems. Diagnoses found in the DSM-V or the ICD-10 and others are imperative to qualify for an IEP/ILP or Section 504 Plan in public and private schools, and for continuing accommodations at most colleges and universities. Students cannot get prescription medications without a formal diagnosis. Yet we also know that diagnoses while helpful, do not give us a full explanation of a person’s challenges.

Diagnoses are convenient means of communicating among professionals. It is easy to confuse a diagnosis with an aspect of a person’s identity. Someone may say, “I have depression,” and may see their identity limited by that descriptor. Or the person feels there is no path towards change. Diagnoses are tools not necessary destinies. Diagnoses are a starting point and can open a door to change.

We believe people can change, especially with guidance and collaboration. Embracing an individual’s challenges within the context of their strengths leads to their roadmap for change. We believe detailed behavioral analysis of a person’s psychological patterns in their family, culture, and society, is empowering and facilitates change. Such analysis, while viewing people through lenses of acceptance and collaboration clears the way for change.
